  1. Course Objectives 

The purpose of this course is to provide English students, using texts of high complexity, integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness. 


  1. Grading 

  1. Tests, Essays, and major Projects will be worth 40% of the quarterly average. 

  1. Classwork, Quizzes, and Formative Assessments will be worth 30% of the quarterly average. 

  1. USA Test Prep (technology) will be 15% of the quarterly average. 

  1. Participation and homework will be 15% of the quarterly average.

  1. Agenda for homework (you must have an agenda present in class, it will be your bathroom pass) 

  1. Pocket dictionary and thesaurus (must be brought to every class). 


  1. Class Requirements 

  1. Students are required to bring all items in the materials list to class daily. 

  1. The dividers should be labeled as follows: 

  1. Classwork 

  1. Homework 

  1. Notes 

  1. Writing 



  1. Late assignments and Make-up work 

  1. Students will have 1 extra class period to turn in homework for a lower grade. For example, if an assignment is assigned on Monday block day, it can be turned in for 100% on Wednesday or minus 30 points on Friday. It will not be accepted for a grade other than Zero after that. 

  1. Students will be able to receive, complete, and turn in make-up work when they are absentin order for the grade to be input into the gradebook the absence MUST be EXCUSED.  If they are absent, they will be given a Z in the gradebook until the assignment has been turned in and the absence has been excused.   

  1. It is the student’s responsibility to inquire what assignments, activities, test or quiz announcements were administered. 

  1. Parents and students may find this information on our school website:  

  1. If the student is absent on a test or quiz day, he/she will be expected to make arrangements to     make up the quiz or test  

  1. Those students who have been absent for an extended period of time will need to make arrangements to stay after school to complete the makeup work.   

  1. **It is the student’s responsibility to make these arrangements. If a student has not made up the assignments within two days of their return to school, zero’s will be given for all assignments that needed to be made up.**  



  1. Homework 

  1. Homework increases responsibility by developing organization and study skills. It encourages independent learning while appropriately involving parents. It also promotes and supports the classroom curriculum while encouraging students to become lifelong learners 

  1. Homework will be assigned on a daily basis and is due on its designated due date. 

  1. It is to be completed independently with support only when needed. 

  1. As homework fosters responsibility, failure to return homework will result in a zero. 

  1. All homework will be collected in the beginning of class and will not be accepted after the class has begun.  

  1. All students will be required to register to the school’s website in order to receive alerts via email or text messages whenever homework and reminders are posted.   


  1. Independent Reading Novels:  

  1.  Students will be required to read two novels per quarter.  Each novel will be covered in a period of 4-5 weeks.  The students will be given at least a two weeks’ notice of the due date for each novel.  Some novels will be read in class and some will be read independently.  Novels do not have to be purchased, students can borrow them from other students or they can check them out from the library.     

  1. Quizzes and Tests 

  1. All quizzes and tests will be announced (verbally, written on the board, and posted on 

  1. Pop quizzes may be given at any time based on previous night’s homework. 


  1. Class Rules and Procedures 

  1. All assignments must be headed with name, student ID number, date, period, quarter, and assignment title in the first two lines of the paper in order to receive a grade. 

  1. All students must be in the classroom and seated in their correct seat before the bell rings. 

  1. All late slips, admits, fieldtrip forms, and other paper work should be given to me personally when entering the classroom. DO NOT LEAVE IT ON MY DESK 

  1. All assignments must be turned in on the proper due date. 

  1. All students must ask permission to leave the classroom for any reason. Passes will only be given for EMERGENCIES ONLY, and they must have an agenda to leave the room. 

  1. Students will show one another respect; value everyone’s property, opinions, and feelings. 

  1. Students must be in complete uniform at all times. 

  1. Follow all Rules and Expectations of Somerset Academy Charter High School 

  1. Adhere to the Code of Student Conduct 

  1. Read and acknowledge the repercussions of plagiarism at Somerset Academy Charter Middle/High 


  1. Following guidelines will result in: 

Daily verbal praise and acknowledgement. 

* A stress free learning environment. 

* Pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere. 


  1. Not following guidelines will result in: 

*1st violation:  Warning 

*2nd violation:  Parental Contact 

*3rd violation: Detention will be given 

*4th violation:  Referral to administrator for further action. 

*Any student who fights, damages school property, or is disrespectful (as defined by teacher) is sent to the office immediately.   



  1. Plagiarism 

  1. Plagiarism, according to the University of Maryland Code of Academic Integrity, is "intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as one's own in any academic exercise." Examples of acts that would be defined as plagiarism are:  

  1. Copying word for word, and neglecting to both enclose the words in quotation marks and to cite the source  

  1. Summarizing or paraphrasing someone else's words or ideas and failing to cite the source  

  1. Reproducing the organization or structure of another person's work and failing to cite it  

  1. Any other act in which someone presents someone else's intellectual material as their own, whether it involves graphics, code, data, charts, etc. 

  1. Plagiarism is a serious act of academic dishonesty which is not taken lightly at Somerset Academy. 

  1. Repercussions for a student who is caught plagiarizing.  

  1. Immediate referral to the Administration 

  1. Failing grade on the assignment 

  1. Student will be required to redo the assignment 

  1. Conference with parents/guardian 



This syllabus will be posted on the school website and will remain there for entire school year.
